She averts her eyes
hangs her head
the hawk was flying
not far from me
in an expansive
blue sky
in an expansive
bright day
it flew just overhead
before I walked
to the round green
trash can
and threw away
the wrappers
from a cheeseburger
and a chicken sandwich
in a crumpled bag
from McDonald's
when I returned to my seat
at the picnic table
and looked up
the sky was empty
the hawk was gone
She averts her eyes
I hope, in time
She will open them
and let me see
