Averted

July 14, 2009

She averts her eyes
hangs her head

the hawk was flying
not far from me
in an expansive
blue sky
in an expansive
bright day

it flew just overhead
before I walked
to the round green
trash can
and threw away
the wrappers
from a cheeseburger
and a chicken sandwich
in a crumpled bag
from McDonald's

when I returned to my seat
at the picnic table
and looked up
the sky was empty
the hawk was gone

She averts her eyes
I hope, in time
She will open them
and let me see
